#KidLitWomen – Book A Day in March (7)

See KidlitWomen for daily links to posts by the children’s lit community, in celebration of Women’s History Month and focusing on improving the climate for social and gender equality. I plan to share my favorite books focused on girl characters and/or written by women through this month.

MAYBE SOMETHING BEAUTIFUL by F. Isabel Campoy and Theresa Howard with art by Rafael López is a picture book based on and inspired by a true story. Young Mira lives in a gray drab neighborhood. She tries to add splashes of color by handing out her art to neighbors. One day, she sees a man with paintbrushes studying her drawing of a sun that she had taped to a wall. He starts to paint on the wall and invites Mira and the rest of the neighborhood to join them and together they create something beautiful. Gorgeous illustrations! More about the book.

I had the pleasure of being on a panel about strong diverse girl characters in children’s lit at NCTE 17 last fall where I met the author Isabel Campoy. Isabel is brilliant and warm and a true talent. I look forward to reading more of her books!
